  • Work with Product and Engineering to deliver tools that teams will use
  • Write technical guides that let engineers find answers and work independently
  • Apply AI tools and automation to speed up development and troubleshooting and improve platform reliability

What you bring

  • At least three years building and shipping complex backend systems
  • Strong command of a modern backend programming language, plus familiarity with relational and non-relational databases
  • You understand cloud-native or hybrid cloud solutions and gather feedback to improve internal tools
  • You use AI-powered engineering tools as part of your regular workflow

Who this fits

This mid-level role suits an engineer who enjoys building platform software for other engineers and improving its usability through feedback. The position is based in Somerville, Massachusetts, with office attendance required at least three days per week. You’ll work with Engineering, DevOps and Product Management.

About You

You're an engineer at heart who finds joy in building the software that other software runs on — and you think about that software like a product. Your customers happen to be other engineers, so you care about how the platform feels to use, not just whether it works. You believe a platform should be a set of robust, resilient, and intuitive libraries rather than a collection of scripts, and you're curious about where people get stuck and why. You're eager to use AI-assisted development tools to move faster, improve the developer experience, and make the platform more reliable.

What skills do I need?

  • 3+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping complex backend systems
  • Strong skills in at least one modern backend programming language
  • Working knowledge of relational and non-relational databases
  • Solid understanding of cloud native or cloud hybrid solutions
  • A product mindset toward internal tooling — you seek out feedback from the engineers using what you build and iterate on it
  • Comfort using AI-powered engineering tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) in your day-to-day workflow

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with our tech stack — Node.js, Go, TypeScript, React, RabbitMQ, MongoDB, Postgres, AWS
  • Prior experience developing tools that improve the developer experience
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and working with containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Side projects or personal builds where you owned something end to end, from idea to real users

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain clean, high-quality, efficient, and well-tested code that aligns with project specifications
  • Design and implement the abstractions that bridge the gap between software engineering and DevOps
  • Talk to the engineers who use the platform, find where they lose time, and help turn that into prioritized work
  • Partner with Product and Engineering counterparts to build tooling that teams actually adopt
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation that helps engineers self-serve
  • Use AI-assisted tooling and automation workflows to improve developer productivity, accelerate troubleshooting, and strengthen platform reliability

Key Collaborators

  • Engineering
  • DevOps
  • Product Management
