Role brief

techroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Build Android app features with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose for the Buyer Destination team
  • Use Scrum and other Agile practices to plan, deliver and improve engineering work
  • Raise code quality through testing, pairing and reviews, while helping teammates strengthen team practices
  • Work with distributed colleagues and communicate clearly across engineering and non-engineering teams
  • Build mobile apps that consume REST APIs and remain maintainable as they scale

What you bring

  • At least ten years of professional software development in teams with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • At least eight years building Android apps with Kotlin, ideally in e-commerce or service-based systems
  • Strong Jetpack Compose experience and working knowledge of Android architecture patterns, Coroutines, Flow and Hilt or Dagger
  • Experience integrating REST APIs and evidence of delivering complex projects over an extended period

Who this fits

This mid-level individual contributor role suits an experienced Android engineer comfortable with Kotlin, Compose and collaborative Agile delivery. You’ll work with geographically distributed teams, so clear communication and remote collaboration matter. The role is hybrid in Portland, and remote hires are not eligible for U.S. visa sponsorship.

From the employer

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader — we’re changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We’re committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.

Our customers are our compass, authenticity thrives, bold ideas are welcome, and everyone can bring their unique selves to work — every day. We're in this together, sustaining the future of our customers, our company, and our planet.

Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers — and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.

This opening is with the Buyer Destination Team. We're focused on improving the experience of buying and selling specialty items on ebay, and work closely with our business team to identify niche markets, unusual features, partnerships, and emerging technologies to help our customers.

The Job

As an Android Engineer on the Buyer Destination Team, you should already have an established foundation in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, as well as fluency in Agile engineering practices and delivery.

We follow the Scrum framework and focus on continual improvement in our practices, driven from the ground up. We expect you to advocate for improvements in code and culture, and to support your colleagues in the same.

We enjoy TDD, pairing, code reviews, and other techniques to maintain high-quality code and resiliency as a team. Quality is more than just code coverage, and everyone is responsible for keeping the bar high.

We work with geographically dispersed teams, so excellent communication and remote collaboration skills are necessary for our projects to succeed.

Who are we looking for?

During our interviews, expect to discuss and demonstrate that you're able to meet these qualifications:

  • 10+ years of professional software development, working in teams with a mix of engineers and non-engineers.
  • 8+ years developing Android applications using Kotlin, preferably with a focus on e-commerce and service-driven architecture.
  • Strong experience building modern Android applications using Jetpack Compose and familiarity with Android architecture components (MVVM/MVI), Coroutines, Flow, and dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or Dagger.
  • Experience consuming RESTful APIs and building scalable, maintainable mobile applications.
  • Please provide links to any apps you've published on the Google Play Store or open-source projects you've contributed to—we're excited to see what you've built!
  • Evidence that you can deliver on challenging, long-term projects. A degree is great, but not necessary for most of the work we do. We'll happily consider equivalent professional experience.
  • Interest and enthusiasm about making eBay a better marketplace for everyone, everywhere.

What do we offer? When we take care of good people, we produce great products. When we hire people with diverse experiences, backgrounds, abilities, and talents, we're able to understand and better serve more buyers and sellers. eBay offers competitive salaries and benefits at all levels, including parental leave, flexible work hours, extensive health benefits and insurance. We are committed to accessibility, diversity, and inclusion -- for our employees and our customers.
