Role brief

techroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Build features across the stack, from technical design and implementation through documentation and customer follow-up
  • Speak with customers about issues and feedback, then use what you learn to guide product work
  • Propose API structures and technical approaches, documenting choices and incorporating engineering feedback
  • Improve reliability with alerting, telemetry, internal tools and automation as the customer base grows
  • Develop agent workflows, including planning, tool use, evaluations, observability and guardrails

What you bring

  • At least four years designing and engineering digital products
  • You can explain technical decisions clearly and challenge approaches when needed
  • You bring strong product judgment and can shape features directly with customers
  • You understand what makes developer tools intuitive, ideally from shipping products for developers

Who this fits

This mid-level role suits a product-minded engineer who wants ownership from technical design through customer communication. Most work is in backend Go, with React used for frontend features; experience with either is a plus. The position is hybrid in San Francisco.

From the employer

Our Mission

At Ampersand, we are building scalable integration infrastructure that delivers real-time context to AI agents in seconds. Our declarative platform, 150+ open-source connectors, and embeddable UI components give developers the building blocks they need to ship deep, bidirectional integrations.

We power cutting-edge AI companies like 11x, Orb, Square, and Crunchbase. Almost every engineering team that has evaluated us against other solutions has chosen to use Ampersand. As our product and brand evolve, we're looking for great people to join our experienced team of former Firebase, AWS, Meta and Square engineers and operators.

About Us

Ampersand was founded in 2022 by Ayan Barua and Lauren Long — two engineers and repeat founders with a rare combination of developer tools and SaaS experience. You can learn more about our full team here.

We've raised Series A funding from top-tier investors known for their early-stage bets on generational companies like Anthropic, Apple, Twilio, Supabase, and Vercel.

Together, we believe:

  • This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build the connectivity infrastructure for AI. Seizing this moment requires passion, hard work, and continuous learning. At the same time, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

  • Velocity comes from great strategic decisions, not doing the 99 things you don't have to do.

  • In five core values that shape how we work every day: Craft, Customer Empathy, Ownership Mindset, Velocity, and Humility.

The Role

We're hiring a Product Engineer to shape the user experience of a platform used by some of the most technically sophisticated teams in software and AI.

This is a foundational role. You'll work closely with the founders, engineers, and customers to design experiences for complex, developer-facing workflows — and help establish the design standards the product will be built on from here. The team is small, the ownership is real, and the people you'll work with care deeply about craft. If you do your best work when the problems are hard and what you ship actually matters, then this is the environment for it.

What You’ll Own

  • Full Stack Feature Development — Own the full loop: technical architecture, implementation, documentation, and customer communication. No throwing work over the fence. You will primarily work in the backend (Golang), but you are also comfortable implementing frontend features (React).

  • Customer Engagement — Talk directly to customers — support questions, feedback gathering. Let what you hear shape what you build.

  • API Design and Architecture — Every engineer proposes API designs and technical architecture for the features they work on. We write succinct design docs, generously give each other feedback, and push towards the best solution.

  • Scale and Reliability — We are rapidly scaling our customer base, so we need to build with scale and edge cases in mind. Every engineer contributes to building alerting, telemetry, internal tooling, and automation to help us continue to ship fast while maintaining reliability.

  • AI Agents — In addition to our platform, we are building AI agents both of our own use and to ship to our customers. You will work on planning, tool use, evals, observability, guardrails, and the infrastructure needed to make agentic workflows reliable for customers.

What You’ll Bring

  • 4+ years engineering and designing digital products, ideally in B2B SaaS, developer tools, enterprise software, or technical products

  • Golang and React experience is a strong plus

  • You are AI-forward and love trying new AI tools. You think of yourself not as a coder, but as a builder who harnesses AI to multiply their productivity.

  • Strong communication skills; you can articulate design decisions and push back when something isn't right. Engineers here write their own feature docs and own their decisions

  • Great taste in what makes developer tools intuitive; ideally you've shipped customer-facing developer products before

  • Strong product intuition — you can work directly with customers to design features, not just implement specs

The Perks

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, optional HSA

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Commuter benefits

  • Free team lunch on in-office days

  • Flexible PTO (2–4 weeks recommended), plus 11 company holidays and separate paid sick leave

  • Paid parental leave: 16 weeks for birthing parents, 8 weeks for non-birthing parents (covers birth, adoption, foster, and surrogacy)

  • Compassionate leave: up to 10 paid days for family building, loss, caregiving, and other major life events

  • Team socials and retreats
